What is a Genome?

DNA, genes, chromosomes — and how they all fit into the 6-billion-letter instruction set that makes you, you.

DNA — The Language of Life

Every cell in your body — except red blood cells — carries a complete copy of your genome inside its nucleus. The genome is written in DNA, a long molecule made of just four chemical letters: A, T, G, and C. These letters pair up (A with T, G with C) to form the famous double helix.

Your genome is roughly 6 billion letters long. If you typed it out at standard book size, it would fill about 3,000 thick volumes. Yet every cell of yours holds the entire library, coiled up small enough to fit inside a structure thinner than a strand of spider silk.

DNA, Gene, Genome — What's the Difference?

DNA is the molecule itself — the chemical that carries the instructions.

A gene is a specific stretch of DNA that codes for something — usually a protein. You have around 20,000 genes.

The genome is the full set: all your DNA, including both the genes and the vast regions between them. For a long time scientists called these in-between regions "junk DNA," but we now know they regulate when, where, and how genes are switched on and off.

From DNA to Protein: The Central Dogma

When a cell needs to do something — repair tissue, fight infection, digest food — it reads the relevant gene and uses that information to build a protein. The flow is simple: DNA is copied into RNA, and RNA is translated into protein. Proteins then do almost all the actual work in your body.

This means your genome is less like a blueprint and more like a recipe book. Cells flip to the page they need, follow the instructions, then close it again.

Why It Matters for You

Almost every trait you have — eye color, how you metabolize caffeine, your tendency to gain weight, your risk for certain conditions — is influenced by your genome. Not determined by it, but influenced by it. Understanding what's in your DNA is the first step to understanding why your body responds the way it does.

The next article explains how individual differences in DNA — called variants — translate into real biological effects.

Your results offer a comprehensive view of how your genetics influence mental and cognitive traits, physical characteristics, potential health risk factors, and how your body responds to different nutrients and dietary patterns. By combining insights across these areas, you gain a clearer understanding of your overall well-being and how your DNA interacts with your lifestyle.

Our analysis is built on high-quality genetic sequencing and established scientific research to provide reliable and meaningful insights. While genetic testing offers a powerful way to understand patterns and predispositions, results are probabilistic rather than absolute. This means your insights reflect tendencies and risk levels — not guaranteed outcomes or medical diagnoses.
We continuously update our analyses as scientific knowledge evolves, ensuring your results remain aligned with the latest research.

After completing your order, your DNA kit is delivered within a few business days. Once your sample is collected and sent back to the lab, our process only takes up to 10 days. You'll be notified by email as soon as your results are ready to view. You can view all your detailed results from your bioRitma app.

Your privacy is a core priority. Your genetic and personal data are stored securely within our own protected systems and are never shared with third parties without your explicit consent. You remain in full control of your data and can request its removal from our database at any time.
We follow strict security and privacy practices — fully aligned with KVKK (Turkey's Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698) and GDPR-grade protections, where genetic data is treated as a special category — to ensure your information is handled confidentially and responsibly throughout the entire process.
