Why your environment matters too

Identical twins, different lives. The same genetic variant can mean different things depending on age, lifestyle, diet, and context. Your genome is fixed — its meaning isn't.

Identical Genomes, Different Lives

Identical twins share 100% of their DNA. They start life with the same genome. Yet they often grow into adults with different heights, different health histories, and different ages of disease onset. By age 70, identical twins differ in many traits as much as unrelated people do.

This is the clearest possible evidence that genes don't fully determine outcomes. Your genome sets a range — environment, behavior, and time decide where in that range you actually land.

Gene-Environment Interaction

Many genetic effects only show up under specific environmental conditions. The classic example is lactose intolerance: virtually everyone is born able to digest milk. After childhood, certain genetic variants determine whether you keep producing the enzyme that breaks down lactose. But "intolerance" only matters if you actually consume dairy. The variant alone is meaningless without the environment to express it.

The same logic applies to most chronic conditions. A high genetic risk for type 2 diabetes is dramatically blunted by physical activity and weight management. A genetic predisposition to vitamin D deficiency only matters if you don't get enough sunlight or supplementation.

What Counts as Environment

In genetics, "environment" is everything that isn't DNA:

- Diet — what, how much, and when you eat

- Physical activity — frequency, intensity, and type

- Sleep — quality and duration

- Stress — chronic and acute

- Exposures — sunlight, air quality, chemicals

- Social environment — relationships, support, isolation

- Healthcare access — screening, early intervention

Most of these are at least partially within your control.

The Modifiable Edge

Here's the practical implication: when your genetic report flags an elevated risk, the next question is always whether the underlying biology is modifiable. For coronary artery disease, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, and many cancers — yes, often substantially. For some neurodegenerative conditions and rare disorders — less so.

bioRitma always pairs genetic findings with what's actionable. A risk you can do something about is far more useful than a risk you can't.

Your Genome Is Fixed. Its Meaning Isn't.

You can't change your DNA. But you can change the environment in which it operates. That's the point of personalized health: not to fight your biology, but to give it the conditions in which it does best.

Your results offer a comprehensive view of how your genetics influence mental and cognitive traits, physical characteristics, potential health risk factors, and how your body responds to different nutrients and dietary patterns. By combining insights across these areas, you gain a clearer understanding of your overall well-being and how your DNA interacts with your lifestyle.

Our analysis is built on high-quality genetic sequencing and established scientific research to provide reliable and meaningful insights. While genetic testing offers a powerful way to understand patterns and predispositions, results are probabilistic rather than absolute. This means your insights reflect tendencies and risk levels — not guaranteed outcomes or medical diagnoses.
We continuously update our analyses as scientific knowledge evolves, ensuring your results remain aligned with the latest research.

After completing your order, your DNA kit is delivered within a few business days. Once your sample is collected and sent back to the lab, our process only takes up to 10 days. You'll be notified by email as soon as your results are ready to view. You can view all your detailed results from your bioRitma app.

Your privacy is a core priority. Your genetic and personal data are stored securely within our own protected systems and are never shared with third parties without your explicit consent. You remain in full control of your data and can request its removal from our database at any time.
We follow strict security and privacy practices — fully aligned with KVKK (Turkey's Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698) and GDPR-grade protections, where genetic data is treated as a special category — to ensure your information is handled confidentially and responsibly throughout the entire process.
